Pod System vs Vape Mod: Which Should You Buy?
Nearly every vape sold today is one of two things: a compact pod system, or a larger mod with a separate tank. They are built around opposite priorities, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason people give up on a device after a fortnight.
This compares them honestly, including where each falls short.
The short answer
If you are switching from cigarettes, want something pocketable, and do not want to think about settings, buy a pod system.
If you want large vapour, all-day battery, and control over how the device performs, buy a mod.

Draw style matters more than specifications
This is the part people underestimate. A pod gives a mouth-to-lung draw: you pull vapour into your mouth, then inhale, exactly as with a cigarette. A mod gives a direct-to-lung draw: an open, airy pull straight into the lungs.
Someone used to cigarettes who buys a powerful mod usually finds the draw wrong and the throat hit harsh. Match the draw style first; everything else is secondary.
Running cost
A pod uses perhaps 2–4ml of e-liquid a day at high nicotine strength. A sub-ohm mod can get through 10ml or more at low strength. Coils cost about the same either way, but a mod burns through liquid several times faster.
Against that, mods take cheap replaceable cells and last for years, while a pod's sealed battery eventually degrades and ends the device's life.
For most people, the pod is cheaper to run and the mod is cheaper to own.
Types of mod, if you go that way
Box mods
The standard shape. A regulated chipset, one or two removable cells, and a screen. Reliable and consistent, and they pair with almost any tank.
Variable wattage
Effectively every regulated mod now. You set the power and the chipset holds it steady as the battery drains, so the last pull matches the first.
Temperature control
The device monitors coil temperature and cuts power before the cotton scorches, which prevents dry hits. It only works with specific wire types — stainless steel, nickel or titanium — not standard kanthal.
Squonk mods
A niche for rebuilders. A bottle inside the mod feeds liquid up to a rebuildable deck, giving dripping-level flavour without carrying a bottle. Not a beginner device.
Where pod mods sit
The line has blurred. Pod mods — the OXVA XLIM series is a common example — take replaceable coils, offer adjustable wattage, and can run either a tight or an open draw depending on the coil fitted.
For a lot of people this is now the sensible middle: near-pod size, most of a mod's flexibility. If you cannot decide, this is the category to look at.
Which should you buy?

Is a mod better than a pod?
No — they are built for different things. A mod produces more vapour and offers more control. A pod is smaller, simpler and closer to smoking. Better depends entirely on what you want.
Can I use salt nicotine in a mod?
Not at pod strengths. 20mg salts in a sub-ohm mod delivers far too much nicotine and is genuinely unpleasant. Mods take low-strength freebase liquid — see E-Liquid.
Do mods need more maintenance?
Somewhat. Larger tanks need cleaning, coils are replaced more often because of liquid throughput, and removable cells need their wraps checked.
Which lasts longer on a charge?
A mod, usually comfortably. A pod is typically a daily charge; a dual-cell mod often runs two days or more.
