Common Vape Problems and How to Fix Them
Most vape faults are not faults at all. They are a worn coil, a dry wick, or a seal that has been overtightened. Work through the symptom you have and you will usually fix it in a few minutes.
Burnt taste
The most common complaint, and almost always the wick rather than the device.
Worn coil. After one to three weeks the cotton is spent. Replace it — see how to change a vape coil and browse Pods & Coils.
New coil not primed. Firing before the cotton has soaked burns it instantly and permanently. Drip liquid onto the wicking ports, fill, then wait five to ten minutes.
Wattage too high. Stay inside the range printed on the coil.
Chain vaping. The wick cannot re-saturate. Leave 15–20 seconds between pulls.
Liquid too thick. High-VG liquid in a small pod will not wick fast enough. Move to a 50/50 — see how to choose e-liquid.
On a disposable, a burnt taste usually means it is simply finished.
Leaking
Worn coil. Saturated cotton stops sealing. Usually the answer.
Overtightened. Crushed o-rings leak more, not less. Finger-tight only.
Perished seals. O-rings harden over months, faster with citrus and menthol. Most tanks ship with a spare seal kit.
Overfilled. Liquid in the central airflow tube runs straight out. Keep it below the fill line.
Heat or pressure. A device left in a hot car or taken on a flight will push liquid out. Store upright and out of direct sun — a real consideration in a UAE summer.
Gurgling and spitback
Both mean liquid is pooling where it should not be.
Take the pod or tank apart and dry the airflow channel with a tissue. Draw more slowly and gently — a hard pull floods the coil. If it persists, the coil is flooded and should be replaced.
A device stored on its side is the usual cause of a morning gurgle.
Weak or no vapour
- Check the charge. Many devices keep firing at reduced output when low.
- Check liquid level. Obvious, easy to miss.
- Clean the contacts. Residue on the pod and battery contacts breaks the connection. Wipe both with a dry cloth or cotton bud.
- Reseat the pod. Remove and click it back in firmly.
- Check the wattage if your device is adjustable.
- Replace the coil if output has been fading over days.
Device will not fire
Locked. Most devices lock with five rapid clicks of the fire button. Five more unlock it.
Flat battery. Try a different cable and adapter before concluding the device is dead — cables fail more often than devices.
Blocked airflow sensor. On draw-activated pods, liquid or dust in the sensor stops it detecting your draw. Blow gently through the device with the pod removed.
Error message. "No atomizer" means the coil is not making contact — reseat it, check the contact pin is not pushed in. "Atomizer short" means the coil has failed; replace it. "Check battery" on a mod means the cell needs charging or the wrap is damaged.
Battery draining quickly
Lower wattage, or fit a higher-resistance coil. Both cut consumption significantly.
If the device is a year or more old, the cell has simply degraded — that is normal and not repairable on a sealed device. On mods with removable cells, replace the cell. Never use one with a torn wrap; see vape battery safety and Accessories.
Flavour has faded
If it happened over days, the coil is going. If it happened suddenly and everything tastes muted, it is likely vaper's tongue — flavour fatigue from one liquid. Rotate between two, drink water, and it usually returns within a day.
Disposable-specific problems
Sealed devices give you fewer options.
Blinking light. Usually flat or empty, sometimes a short from a hard draw. Leave it a few minutes and try one gentle pull.
Weak from new. Occasionally an air bubble in the wick. A few slow pulls normally clear it.
Tastes burnt early. Either it is genuinely finished, or it has been chain-vaped and the wick has dried out.

Why does my vape taste burnt with a brand new coil?
It was fired before the cotton soaked through. Prime the wicking ports, fill, and wait ten minutes before the first pull.
Can a leaking tank be repaired?
Usually. Replace the coil, inspect the o-rings, and avoid overtightening. Persistent leaking after that points to a cracked glass or a damaged base.
Is it safe to keep using a device that gets warm?
Mild warmth during use is normal. A device that becomes hot to hold, smells of burning plastic, or has a swollen battery should be taken out of use immediately.
How do I know if it is the coil or the device?
Fit a fresh coil. If the problem disappears, it was the coil — which it usually is.
