Nic Salt vs Regular E-Liquid: Which Should You Vape?
Two bottles can both say 20mg and deliver completely different experiences. One is salt nicotine, the other freebase. Putting the wrong one in your device is the most common reason a new setup feels harsh, or feels like nothing at all.
Here is the practical difference.
The chemistry, briefly
Freebase is nicotine in its pure, unmodified form. It is alkaline, and at higher concentrations it produces a sharp throat hit that most people find unpleasant above roughly 12mg.
Salt nicotine is the same nicotine with an acid added — usually benzoic acid. That lowers the pH and neutralises the harshness, so 20mg or 50mg goes down smoothly. It also absorbs a little faster, which is why a salt hits sooner.
Despite the name, there is no table salt involved and it does not taste salty.

Matching liquid to device
This is where it goes wrong most often.
Salts belong in low-power devices. Pod systems and small AIOs run high-resistance coils at modest wattage, producing a small amount of vapour carrying a lot of nicotine. Put 20mg salt in a pod system and it works exactly as intended.
Freebase belongs in mods. A sub-ohm setup produces several times the vapour, so the nicotine has to be far lower to compensate. 3mg in a mod can deliver as much nicotine per hour as 20mg in a pod.
Put 20mg salt in a sub-ohm mod and the result is genuinely unpleasant — nausea and dizziness within a few pulls. This is the single most important thing to get right.

These are starting points, not prescriptions. If you find yourself vaping constantly, the strength is probably too low. If you get a headache or a scratchy throat, it is too high.
Flavour differences
Salts tend to carry sweet, fruit and menthol profiles cleanly at low power. Freebase in a sub-ohm tank produces more vapour and so more perceived flavour intensity, which suits dessert and complex blends.
Neither is better. They are tuned for different amounts of vapour.
Cost over a month
Salts come in smaller bottles but last longer, because a pod uses a fraction of the liquid a mod does. A 30ml bottle of salt might last ten days; 60ml of freebase in a sub-ohm mod can disappear in under a week.
Per month, salts in a pod are usually the cheaper way to vape.

Can I mix salt and freebase in the same tank?
Technically yes, but you lose control of the final strength. It is not worth the guesswork.
Does salt nicotine contain more nicotine?
Not inherently — it is sold at higher concentrations because it can be inhaled comfortably at those levels. A 20mg salt and a 20mg freebase contain the same nicotine; only the throat hit differs.
Why does my salt liquid taste harsh?
