Nicotine Pouches and Snus in the UAE: A Buyer's Guide

Nicotine pouches are the fastest-growing category in our shop, and also the one customers ask the most questions about. The names are used loosely, the strength numbers are not comparable between brands, and the range has grown quickly. This guide covers what actually matters when choosing one, and the brands we stock in Abu Dhabi.

You must be 18 or over to buy any product mentioned here.

What a nicotine pouch is

A pouch is a small, soft sachet containing nicotine, plant fibre, flavouring and a sweetener. You place it between your upper lip and gum and leave it there. There is no vapour, no smoke, no battery and nothing to charge or refill.

Most people keep one in for somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes. The effect builds over the first few minutes rather than arriving immediately, which catches out people used to a device.

Snus or nicotine pouch? The names are used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing

Traditional Swedish snus is made with moist ground tobacco leaf. Modern white pouches contain nicotine but no tobacco leaf — the nicotine is combined with plant fibre instead. That is the actual difference in composition, and it is why you will see the same products sold as "snus", "white snus", "all-white" or "nicotine pouches" depending on the shop.

Nearly everything sold in the UAE, including everything we stock, is the white pouch type. If a listing says snus, check whether it means the traditional tobacco product or a white pouch, because the two feel quite different in use.

Strength is the decision that matters most

This is where most people get it wrong. Strength is printed in milligrams per pouch, and the range across our shelves is wide — from NIQS at 4mg through to Zeel and Waka at 35mg. That is close to a ninefold difference.

Two things are worth knowing:

The number is not comparable between brands. Manufacturers measure nicotine content per pouch, but how much of it is actually released varies with pouch size, moisture and formulation. A 12mg pouch from one brand can feel stronger than a 15mg from another.

Too strong is genuinely unpleasant. An overly strong pouch produces a hot, prickling sensation under the lip, and often hiccups or a headache. You cannot dilute it or take half. If you are starting out, begin at the lower end and work up.

As a rough starting point: 4–6mg is a light pouch, 10–16mg is the mainstream middle, and anything at 30mg or above is a strong pouch aimed at experienced users.

Slim or mini

Format is about fit, not strength. A slim pouch is the standard size and sits comfortably for most people. A mini is shorter and thinner, sits less visibly, and is the better choice if you find a full-size pouch intrusive.

Velo and White Fox both offer mini versions alongside their standard range, so you can try the same flavour in either size.

Flavour

The category is dominated by mint, and for good reason — the cooling works well with the format. But the range is broader than people expect:

  • Mint, in every variation. Vox builds its entire range around it, from Sweet Mint through to a sharp Icy Mint. Swag keeps it simple with two options.
  • Fruit and berry. Velo has the widest flavour list we carry — grape, watermelon, mango, grapefruit, cherry and several berry blends. NIQS covers Watermelon Rush, Mango Burst and Summer Berries.
  • The outliers. Worth knowing about if mint and fruit both bore you: Pablo makes a Cappuccino and a Cherry Cola, ZYN makes an Espresso, and Zeel has a Cola Cherry Fizz.

The brands we stock

NIQS — the lowest strengths we carry, from 4mg to 7mg. The sensible place to start if you have not used pouches before.

Zeel — the broadest strength spread in one brand, at 6mg, 12mg and 35mg, across eight flavours. Useful if you want to find your level without switching brands.

White Fox — the Nordic formula, and one of the strongest and most recognisable names in the category. Available in mini as well as standard.

Velo — the largest flavour range we carry by some distance, in both slim and mini.

ZYN — the most widely known brand internationally, with a lineup running from standard mints through citrus, berry and espresso.

Pablo — a strong pouch with an icy, fruit-forward range, plus the Cappuccino for anyone who has had enough mint.

Vox — mint specialists, at 11mg and 14mg.

Waka — four strengths from 6mg to 35mg across Fresh Mint, Watermelon and Cola.

Swag and Zar — smaller ranges, with Zar offering each flavour in your choice of strength.

If you want the pouch format without nicotine at all, we also stock the Ammo Energy Pouch, which uses caffeine instead.

Practical points

Keep them sealed and cool. Pouches dry out once opened repeatedly in heat, and a dry pouch releases less and feels rougher. In an Abu Dhabi summer, do not leave a tin on a car dashboard.

Use the catch lid. Most tins have a compartment in the top for used pouches, which is what it is for.

One at a time. Doubling up does not double the effect in a useful way; it mostly makes the experience unpleasant.
